p.k. 14 - “多麼美妙的夜晚” (“how majestic is the night”)
it’s difficult to say whether p.k.14 are the sonic youth or the fall of the chinese music scene - on one hand, the only constant in the band since its nanjing founding in 1997 has been the singer, yang haisong, but unlike the fall, they’ve been getting more stable, not less.
of course it’s probably imperialist occidentalist rambliing to try and pin a western band’s name on the guys I’d consider to be the best band in china and one of the best bands in the world. sometime this week I’ll write a little primer on my limited experience in the chinese music scene and how it relates back to the differing perceptions of art in northern and southern urban china.
