33岛 (“33 island” or “no.33island” as they anglicize it) produce a stately barrett-inspired chamber pop in shanghai. never saw them while I was there. looks like they got started right around the time I arrived, in may 2007. exciting to hear this kind of stuff develop around the yuyintang scene.
(yuyintang is the major “underground” music venue. when I was there two years ago, it had just been raided and closed, scattering the scene - its temporary quarters was in an unfinished multi-story retail mart.)
highly recommend listening to 33岛’s studio demos on myspace. they’re obviously still in the embryonic stages of working through their influences, but it’s a) in chinese and b) uncompromising.
