re: Question [on the popularity of Dan Deacon]

    lowlife:

I’ve never been a fan of Dan Deacon’s music. Can someone explain his appeal to me?

hipster faux populism. after the high-water mark of elitism receded under accusations that perhaps people just weren’t “getting” things just like elements of the prog movement never “got” punk, “brainy” but simple dance music rushed in to fill the void, under the banner of “everybody should chill out & have a good time but still be able to be elitist and normative-driven.”

dan deacon in particular is great at that because he’s goofily autistic - in no way threatening to you, the listener, on a social level, encouraging his audience to come together around him, at which point you should feel a real sense of kinship and populism, given that 90% of the crowd is gangly white converse-bedecked trash. there’s a reason why his shows with girl talk worked so well.

wow, working in college radio made me a grouch.
